FAQs. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is a FROSH?
A: A FROSH is a term used to describe a first-year orientation. In our case, the BEST one you can get for Science at UBC.
Q: What is The Science Undergraduate Society (SUS)?
A: The Science Undergraduate Society represents students to the Dean of Science, the UBC administration, the Alma Mater Society, and beyond. We are the second largest undergraduate society (right behind Arts) and thus have a significant voice on campus. We also aim to improve the experience of our members (you...and by being an undergraduate you are already a member!) by putting on social events, academic events, and orientation events! Check out www.sus.ubc.ca for more information.
Q: Why do I have to pay for Frosh?
A: This year's frosh is a very full day of activities. Although a large portion of the cost is subsidized by the SUS, the faculty of Science, sponsors, and frosh volunteer fundraisers; we are unable to pay for all costs. We are sure however, that you will not be disappointed with what you'll get.
Q: Why is frosh 2009 limited to so few students?
A: Science Frosh is still a very new program offered for science students. 2009 will be our third year running the program. We can see that there is a large demand for such an event and we are hoping to expand the program significantly in future years.
Q: What if I register but don't show up, can I get a refund?
A: Only under extenuating circumstances will a registration fee be refunded, this will be handled on a case by case basis.
Q: I'm driving to campus, where can I park?
A: The closest parking to the event is the North Parkade. (www.parking.ubc.ca for location and rates)
Q: I've seen a lot of movies where frosh involves hazing. Should I be worried?
A: No, Science Frosh is an opportunity to connect with peers and older students. Hazing is not encouraged, nor will it be permitted during Science Frosh.
Q: Why does Science Frosh only last one day? Why not a whole week?
A: The AMS, along with many other campus groups collectively provide many events that will occupy your first week here at UBC. Science Frosh is still a relatively new program offered by the Science Undergraduate Society and we are consitently testing out the best options for students.
Q: What should/shouldn't I bring to Frosh?
A: Please dress appropriately for the weather. You will be running around the city for a majority of the day and there will not be a place to store your bags or jackets.
Do not bring drugs, alcohol, or valuables. Anybody caught with drugs or alcohol will be immediately expelled. There will be no tolerance for intoxication during your time in Frosh and police will be on site for inspection on the boat cruise.
Q: I'm sold! How do I register?
A: Registration will open 9am on August 21, 2009. and will be conducted online.
